Teak "Tectona
Grandis" is an amazing hardwood known from ancient times for
it's beauty, durability, and value. In Java it's called "Jati"
and its the one wood against all others are measured. In the
past, it grew huge, up to 9 feet in diameter. These giants are
mostly gone, replaced by commercial stands for the garden
furniture industry. Many of our pieces come from "old" teak
which was harvested up to 100 years ago or more. Our antiques
come from an era when it was possible to get "one piece" of
teak for the top of a table or desk. "One piece" items are
becoming rare and command a premium price wherever they are
sourced. Our contemporary pieces are primarily fabricated from
recycled wood from bridges, mills, and houses. These heirlooms
will only become more valuable and difficult to find in the
future
Re-claimed teak comes from
Java houses and teak old , or ancient timbers that have been
neglected or left idle for anywhere from 50 to 200 years.
The lumber is carefully recovered, and cleaned to remove
outside coatings that may have been left from painting,
oxidization, or by other means. Then milling of the wood
begins. Because it is a natural material, variations in color,
and so forth are normal factors that give teak furniture
pieces their charm.
Many people believe that
teak is grown in rainforests, but it cannot grow in such
conditions to a harvestable degree. The source of teak
furniture, which is sold worldwide, does not come from natural
forests, but from plantations. The teak furniture and timber
products industry provide a main source of income for the
indigenous people in places like Java Indonesia, where the
popularity of teak plantations if high.
